Accelerated Reading Program
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the Accelerated Reading Program. Your student took a "Star Reading" test in September, which was done in the computer lab. This is a baseline reading test to measure your child's reading level, and the results are used in the library to check out appropriate books for them. The Star Reading test (software program) adapts to each child's individual response as they are taking the test. This test is administered to all our students at the beginning of every trimester. It is from this test that the teachers determine the number of points each student needs to earn for the trimester.
Once they have finished a book, they take short computer quizzes from any computer in the school. By passing these quizzes, the students then earn points towards their goal. The library is open for book exchanges and for taking quizzes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00-8:45 AM. The library website also has a search engine for all the Accelerated Reader tests available in our library and you may currently have some of these books at home.
We recommend that students read the book thoroughly. For younger students, it is suggested that they read an easy reader book once to you and then once or twice on their own. It is important that the students do not rush through the books in order to take a quiz. Their reading will improve through practice (not because of their reading level) and we are looking for results through their Accelerated Reading comprehension scores. It is important that the students do not compare levels. Each student has their own gifts and talents.
This program has proven to increase the student's reading levels. Practice in reading is the key ingredient for increasing comprehension scores. Searching for books with a corresponding Renaissance Accelerated Reader 360® quiz is easy with AR BookFinder. (Please see the button above.) Students, teachers, parents, and librarians can search using criteria such as book level, interest level, title, author, fiction/nonfiction, subject, award-winners, state lists, and more.
Thank you for all you do to support the school and the library. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me ([email protected]).
Sincerely,
Miss Laura E. Hritz
