Topics and Assessments - 2nd Trimester (current topics & assessments)
Topic: Literature Genres
After the Christmas break, the students will be learning about different types of genres, such as realistic fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, science fiction, biography, informational text, and others. We will discuss each genre in depth through a PowerPoint presentation and worksheets. Students will receive a study guide with information to study for a quiz at a later date.
Assessment #1: Genre Quiz
Students will have a Literature Genre packet from which to study. The quiz will be multiple choice. This quiz will count towards their 2nd trimester grade.
Quiz dates:
4-211 - Wednesday, February 19th - B Day
4-212 - Friday, February 21st - D day
Assessment #2: What Genre is It?
Students will choose a book they have previously read and will complete a worksheet project about its genre. This finished worksheet project will count towards their 2nd trimester grade and will be completed in library class.
Topic: Research Terms, Reference Sources, and Bibliography Citations
In class, we will start to discuss how to conduct research and related terms. We will review the use of a dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, almanac, and encyclopedia. We will learn that we must cite our sources to give credit to the sources we use. We will begin to learn how to "read" a bibliography citation and what should be included in one.
Assessment #3: Reference Unit Quiz
Students will have a Research packet from which to study. The quiz will be multiple choice and matching. This quiz will count towards their 2nd trimester grade. The quiz will be announced at a later date and will depend upon how we move through the Genre Unit.

title, author, characters, setting, and favorite part. This project will be completed in library class.

Students will be using the thesaurus to find synonyms and antonyms. They will complete a worksheet using the thesaurus in class.

- Fiction and Nonfiction Call Numbers
- Parts of a Book
Assessment #1: Call Numbers & Parts of a Book Quiz*
- Students will have two worksheets from which to study (stapled together as a packet).
- Students will be encouraged to take their "Specials/Library Folder" home to look over their worksheets in preparation for the quiz that will be given. We will also review in library class.
- The quiz will be on:
- Parts of a book
- Putting fiction call numbers in order
- Putting non-fiction call numbers in order
- Matching; multiple choice; call numbers in order - labeling 1-5
